Jan. 3rd, 2006 @ 03:36 pm Potato Gun
Inspired by my recent acquisition of Backyard Ballistics by William Gurstelle (thank you very much, Mom & Dad!), I decided to construct a potato gun, aka potato cannon, aka spud gun. Naturally, being the OCD kind of person that I am, I did a quick Web check to see if anyone else was fooling around with Tuber Propulsion Technology and what kind of designs might exist outside of the chapter in Backyard Ballistics.

To my surprise, I found an entire Potato Gun Underground online as evidenced by Google's Potato Cannons and the Potato Cannons of the Internet Webring.

A few recommended sites:

Spudfiles: The #1 Spudgun Database

The Spudgun Technology Center

advancedspuds.com

This was all a bit overwhelming, so I decided to stick to William Gurstelle's design.

For DSDD yesterday, I went to my friend's PhD thesis defense. She does something with the physics of toothpaste, molasses in january and other viscous elastic liquids. It was kind of cool. I've never gone to a physics lecture that wasn't for class, and I'd also never been to a thesis defense before. My brain hurt by the end of it, but it was kind of fun trying to see how much I could understand (not very much, but I tried... and there were brightly colored pretty pictures)

For Do Something Different Day, today I went to the innauguration of Dr. Susan Hockfield as the 16th president of MIT (also first woman and first ife scientist president of MIT). It's a cold gray day, but it was interesting.

I have been lax in reporting my DSD activities, so I'm catching up on the last three weeks.

First, two weeks ago I tried my semiautomatic transmissionCollapse ).

I don't remember what I did last week. It wasn't much, but it wasn't nothing either. I'll post it when I stop blanking out.

This week, I followed some privacy adviceCollapse ).

Mar. 17th, 2005 @ 04:38 pm Dvorak (x-posted to personal journal)
Current Mood: accomplished
So I have come to the end of my first full day using the Dvorak keyboard exclusively. I have practiced off and on all day with a typing tutor program to learn the keys, and completed all of my work (slowly) using only Dvorak. I have also learned to rely heavily on my mouse. *grin*

I took an 8 minute typing test at the end of the day and here’s my score:

Speed: 15 wpm
Accuracy: 98%

Yay me! I don’t think that’s too shabby, personally. :)

Course, it's not just about me, but still. I need to post DSD stuff!! :)

Two weeks ago I applied to be a model. Not long term, or professionally, or anything like that. Fashion Bug had a sign up at the front door saying they need models for their spring fashion show. So, I signed up. Still haven't heard anything, but I am proud of myself for signing up. I think it would be fun.

Last week's Do Something Different Day is not being posted about :)
